The Island of Rhodes has several small towns and Lindos is one of the most serene and striking towns among them. It is located in the south of the capital. Lindos is amphitheatrically situated on the slopes of the hill and the Acropolis stands with grace on the top of that hill and had made Lindos more vulnerable. The unique architecture of Lindos
The houses in Lindos have a beautiful architecture, whitewashed buildings, fine alleys and courtyards paved with pebbles which show the influence of the medieval, Byzantine, and Arabian architecture. The small shops in the narrow alleys are filled with clothes, accessories, handmade crafts, pottery and leather items. The beautiful decoration items displays in the shops attract the tourists so they can explore and buy from the shops for hours. There are various cafes, bars, taverns and hotels in the town, which offer delicious traditional and other different cuisines and tastes.
The Great Acropolis of Lindos
The ancient town of Lindos is at a distance of 45 kilometres from the town of Rhodes. It has a unique geographical importance as it served as a gateway between the Middle East and Europe. It was the chief trading centre during the 8th century BC. Its status declined the 5th century BC after the establishment of Rhodes. Lindos was established in 10th century BC by the Dorians.
The town of Lindos is a rich archaeological place with a great historical importance. The acropolis site and the area beside are filled with archaeological remains, which show that the ancient town was wealthy in its peak time. The acropolis is bordered by a wall which is called Hellenistic. The medieval castle was protecting the ancient yet precious sites. The old castle was constructed by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century. The building was as strong as the two of the towers castle are standing straight until our modern days.
In the early 20th century, the Lindos archaeological site was excavated. The ancient remains were damaged by the Italians in the name of restoration, when they occupied Rhodes in 1912. Now the archaeologists and the locals have done great work for the protection of the ancient remains and the site. The archaeological site is now handled by the Ministry of Culture of Greece.
Another worth seeing place is the Doric Temple of the 4th century which was constructed on the remains of older temples. The temple was used by the Greek people for the worshiping offerings and sacrifices of their benefactor goddess. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Athena Lindia. The sanctuary had five doors. There is also a staircase and on the foot you can find a trireme there, which is the glimpse of relief of an ancient ship of war. You can also trace another Roman temple devoted to the emperor Diocletian.
At the outer side of the medieval castle, a setting of an ancient theatre can be found at the south western side of the hill. It was estimated that the theatre could host around eighteen hundred people. Now the left overs are some part of the auditorium and some rows of seats.
Entertainment in Lindos
The evening life is all fun in Lindos as the restaurants open their roof tops for the visitors giving an awesome view of the sunset with the magnificent Acropolis in the background. The delicious smells emerging from the hot food enhance the visitors’ appetite and the folk music enriches the environment. The nightlife is so peaceful at Lindos because all of the restaurants are closed by 11 pm and the music is turned down. The clubs and bars that are open till late are located away from the settlement, so the tenants do not get disturbed. So, if you visit the area with your children, you must go there as there is no disturbance to children sleeping at night.
For wedding, Lindos is a much preferred place by the people. The Saint Paul’s Bay beautiful chapel is always busy with wedding ceremonies. The wedding party is mostly led by an accordion player called from Rhodes to the town. Lindos is an exotic and picturesque place for a newly wed couple. The beautiful beaches, the peaceful environment and the refreshing atmosphere of the town are ideal to start a life with your partner.
The local Greek people are extremely hospitable and friendly and they take an amazingly good care of their guests and present their best things in front of them. They always try to create a pleasant impression on their visitors. The crime rate is very minimal, and most of the times it’s not the locals who steal the things but mostly they are other tourists. The locals are good helpers and when you need assistance, they are always there for you.
