Parga is the most touristic destination of Epirus. Built on the outskirts of the Venetian castle with a great history and natural beauty, Parga has traditional full bloom houses with wooden balconies and tiled roofs. Parga combines harmoniously the mountain with the sea. On the one hand there is an immense olive grove and on the other there are rocks in the sea, creating strange sounds and sensations. It is a cosmopolitan place with few but good beaches and infrastructure for water sports. You will find several restaurants and developed infrastructure for hosting with several options for hotels rooms and camping. Every year in August a major festival is organized, the “Pargina” that symbolizes the joy of returning Pargians from foreign lands. Fireworks, smoke and lights create a spectacular atmosphere. You can go on a boat and experience the breathtaking beauty and peacefulness of the sea caves at the bay of Lichnos, Sarakinikos and Agios Sostis and youcan also visit the fortresses of Parga and Anthousa.
The castle of Parga is situated atop of a hill fort promontory overlooking the entrance to the port of Parga and the beach of Valtos (swamp) . At this position the Venetians built first a castle in the last years of the Byzantine Empire. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times each time it was occupied by a conqueror. What survives is the one built by the Venetians in the 17th century, with additions made by Ali Pasha when he bought the city by the English in 1818. In order to go to the castle of Parga you will be directed through narrow streets and steps from the port of Parga and after your visit you can head down the hill and then take the paved road to the Swamp beach for a refreshing swim. West of the town of Parga at a short distance there is the famous Swamp beach. At the Swamp tourism development began very early, from the early 50’s. Sarakiniko is just 12 km from Parga and it is a perfect beach for families. It lies 12km from Parga after the village of Agia. You can go there by boat while there is a road leading there starting from Anthousa. However it’s a tough road, suggested only for people who love to drive, lovers of puddles and jeeps. You can enjoy the beautiful sunset and it is suitable for both families and couples.
There you can do water-biking and canoeing. Lichnos is one of the largest beaches, crowded on weekends and ideal for water sports. It is a sandy beach with cliffs on both ends of the caves that create singular patterns and small rocky coves. The visit can be deployed with boats from the beach of Parga. Agios Giannakis beach is located about 6 km away from Parga. It’s a beautiful beach and one of the beaches of the area with the clearest waters. Water sports are available and the beach perfect for everybody. Mprosta and Pisso Krioneri are the central beaches of the town of Parga. Apart from these there are many more beaches out of the way good for those who love adventure and, since by asking you can find everything, just ask for directions.
